An anticipated Dallas-based bar concept that mixes cocktails with science is making its Austin debut January 23. Besides balcony seating there are a wide range of seating from tables, bar, couch, pillow chairs and etc. This personalized mixture was worth what I paid for it and carefully took it to a table on the balcony to enjoy it while looking down at the crowded bars below. It had the perfect combination where it was not too sweet or tart. I was worried at first of what I got myself into but after one taste it was the best mixed drink I had in years. And finally after one more shake he poured a darkish brown substance into the frozen glass and topped it with a thin slice of blood orange. It was like watching a shell gamer with alcohol instead a ball. The Alchemist was like chef in action where I watched him freeze a glass in CO2 giving off a cold mist, grab a whole bunch of ingredients, and begin an elaborate mixing procedure. So I said I wanted a cold sweet citrus flavored drink. He asked me what to make for me and he educated me that this was a place where concatenations were custom made for the customer. It all looked very fancy with a glistening bottle collection along the wall and a bartender who liked like he stepped out of GQ Magazine. A few people were staring at their laptops and I walked to the bar to figure out what to order. I was able to get a closer look at the lamps hanging on the ceiling and the place seems not very busy in the early afternoon. I was never unable to see what was fully up there until this day where I was alone and went beyond the top of the stairs into this upside down world of the 70 Rainey building. The place was called The Tipsy Alchemist. Twice I have walked up the stairs to see the lamps but quickly had to go back down because the people I was with kept walking down Rainey Street and need to catch up with them. I could not take it anymore where I needed a place to have a drink and work, and remembered a bar with lamps hanging upside down from the ceiling. I ended up entering one of the places but encountered shoulder to shoulder of people in line or just standing around enjoying the festivities. An elevated cocktail bar featuring well-crafted cocktails with a touch of science, art, and technique. #Tipsy alchemist austin menu freeDuring SXSW the Rainey Street District was packed with people mostly trying to get into the bars with free food and drinks.
